Under general supervision, performs advanced and complex phlebotomy procedures. Responsibilities include drawing blood samples and handling other samples for laboratory analysis as ordered by physicians, ensuring properly identified and labeled specimens, and performing other job duties as applicable such as administering glucose tolerance tests and sweat chlorides. The role also involves registering patients, ordering tests, verifying order completeness and billing information, and entering patient demographic and test data into the laboratory computer database. Additionally, the position requires preparing specimens for transport, maintaining accurate records, and complying with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures, including the appropriate use of PPE. The phlebotomist is expected to complete annual competency assessments and assume responsibility for their own professional development.
