About The Position

Laredo Technical Services, Inc. (LTSI) is seeking dedicated and qualified Phlebotomy Technicians to interact with donors to collect blood products. This role involves performing duties daily in the local area and on a rotating basis in various sections, including phlebotomy, donor interviews, registration, vitals, and donor recovery. Phlebotomists will rotate through various sections of the Blood Donor Center and on blood drives in remote locations. The position requires independently performing standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking. The work environment includes both local and overnight travel to remote blood drives as needed, with per diem offered for associated expenses. The role also offers the opportunity to work with diverse populations, including Veterans and underserved communities, within a supportive team of business and healthcare professionals.

Requirements

  • High school or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy program accredited by Joint Commission or CAP.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician, Donor Phlebotomy Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary Defense (Health Affairs), ASD(HA).
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Must have performed 50 successful donor collections with an accredited laboratory within the last 2 (two) years.
  • Moderate proficiency in common Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Knowledge of regulations (HIPAA/Privacy Act) regarding the confidentiality of patient medical records, information and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day.
  • Must be willing to work overtime if necessary.
  • Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10 feet.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
  • Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must undergo Urine Drug Testing.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate human volunteer apheresis procedure.
  • Take donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and initiate collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures.
  • Review collection kit to ensure all required information is present; determine types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished; select appropriate venipuncture site, clean to ensure contamination-free field, taking into account any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by patient or medical personnel.
  • Collect specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested.
  • Follow all regulatory regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration, AABB and College of American Pathologists) and safety guidelines for specimen handling and shipment.
  • Follow infection control regulations in handling, storage, and disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Explain the procedure for collection of specimens to the donor.
  • Process whole blood into components.
  • Strip, segment, weigh and store whole blood units.
  • Record information, such as the time of started and stopped drawing blood.
  • Manufacture packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma.
  • Order appropriate laboratory testing required in MHS Genesis.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, maintain adequate supplies in patient care areas, monitor stock levels and expiration dates of available collection tubes and replenishing, when required.
  • Clean and wipe equipment, monitor supply and pull outdated stock.
  • Assemble equipment, verify correct instrument operation and report defects.
  • Receive donors, visitors and answer telephone calls.
  • Determine the nature of inquiry and direct the inquiry to the appropriate section.
  • Take and relay messages.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the section.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
