Responsibilities
Communicates at shift change and follows through on pending specimens.
Determines specimen priority and takes action accordingly.
Responds to pages including Code Blue, RRT and Stroke Alerts.
Always wears proper PPE; practices strict hand hygiene and disposes of biohazardous waste and sharps in proper containers.
Always identifies the patient correctly, verifying ID band information against the test request prior to collecting the specimen.
Always follows posted instructions about arm restrictions.
Draws Blood Bank specimens appropriately utilizing the Blood Bank ID band with 100% accuracy.
Displays good venipuncture technique, rarely misses a vein on any patient.
Collect specimens in appropriate containers paying strict attention to mixing and order of draw.
Displays good technique for microcollection and blood cultures.
Labels specimens correctly with all of the appropriate requisition information to include initials, time and date of collection immediately after collection in the presence of the patient.
Communicates with nursing personnel on patient care issues.
Always notifies nursing if patient refuses test or specimen was unable to be collected.
Always leaves bedside table, phone, call button within reach and discards trash into waste container.
Adhers to standards of performance and the SINAI way.
Interacts with patients as trained, always requesting permission to enter (unless night shift), smiles, introduces self and explains procedure to patient.
Always appears, dresses and conducts themselves in a professional manner.
