About The Position
Performs venipuncture and collects other specimens for laboratory testing. Label specimen containers accurately, deliver to proper destination in a timely manner and perform order entry duties as required. Must be able to provide and understand the specific communication, developmental and treatment needs of patients ranging in age from neonate-birth to geriatric. Compliance: understands and complies with the Standards of Behavior and department policies, procedures and regulations.
Requirements
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Program
- Ability to draw an average of 7 patients per hour within the first 90 days of employment
- Proficient in the use of Laboratory Information System within the first 90 days of employment
- ASCP eligible
- Ability to provide and understand at the bedside the specific communication and collection needs of patients ranging in age from neonate-birth to geriatric
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
- Dependable transportation (including inclement weather)
- Ability to withstand the stress and demands of an active position
- Ability to withstand constant standing, walking, stooping and bending
- Ability to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
- Ability to work as a team member and interact positively with others
- Sensitive touch for locating veins
- Manual dexterity and coordination required for drawing blood
- Must be able to pass a color vision test
Responsibilities
- Procurement and distribution of specimens (blood, urine, etc.)
- Computer data entry and operation of computer equipment
- Processing and receiving specimens for the technical staff
- Preparing send out specimens for reference testing
- Answering incoming calls for the laboratory
- Monitoring phlebotomy supply inventory and rotating supplies as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned
- Maintaining strict confidentiality of work-related information
- Working at optimum speed with accuracy and efficiency
- Taking directions and responding quickly and efficiently
