The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from patients of all ages. They ensure specimens are collected according to protocol, properly labeled, and suitable for testing. The role also involves performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, answering and screening calls, assisting with inventory and supplies, and processing specimens for transport and testing. Additionally, the Phlebotomist orders and verifies test requests, documents information for quality assurance, runs quality control checks, and notifies providers of critical results. They also perform laboratory result entry, proficiency testing, and generate reports. A key responsibility includes instructing employees and students in phlebotomy and related functions, and demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served.
