About The Position

Draws blood from patients and prepares specimens for screening, analysis, or other medical purposes. Collects all sample specimens and labels accordingly. May assist physician/resident/practitioner with routine medical procedures or provide coverage for other areas.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year work-related experience as a phlebotomist
  • A graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program and/or must have documented experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic reception duties: answer telephone calls, take and transfer messages, screen individuals/calls, refer to the appropriate source, schedule appointments, and answer standard questions (escalating complex ones as directed).
  • Perform basic records maintenance: routine record keeping, compiling, searching, numbering, and purging information/documents according to established procedures.
  • Perform basic typing and word processing: edit data for accuracy, make necessary corrections, and perform data entry.
  • Operate photocopier, fax, and other office machines.
  • Perform administrative functions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Assist with electronic documentation and ensure compliance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Assemble equipment for phlebotomy (tourniquet, needles, sharps containers, collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol, etc.) according to test or procedure requirements.
  • Perform phlebotomy and operate equipment under the supervision of a Laboratory Technologist.
  • Verify or record patient/donor identity and provide reassurance to allay fear of the procedure.
  • Prepare appropriate specimens for culture and transport.
