Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the individual collects specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood samples, urine, sputums and performs nasal swabs per orders. Explains safety protocols and procedures to patients, is customer-focused, and performs certain clerical functions. The role involves collecting blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and according to policies and procedures. This includes checking patient identifiers, using hand hygiene, selecting appropriate collection equipment and sites, performing venipuncture, ensuring proper specimen handling and labeling, and monitoring patients post-collection. The phlebotomist also reviews a standard checklist for potential adverse reactions. The role is customer-focused, maintains patient privacy, and follows HIPAA guidelines. With training or competency review, the individual may provide EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions, as well as pediatric and ancillary services. Additionally, the role includes reception and clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, such as faxing, filing orders, answering telephones, and managing requisitions. Maintaining adequate supply inventory and completing monthly inventory checks are also part of the responsibilities. The position requires satisfying annual continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training. Good teamwork and communication skills with co-workers are essential.
