About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the individual collects specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood samples, urine, and sputums, and performs nasal swabs per orders. The role involves explaining safety protocols and procedures to patients, being customer-focused, and performing certain clerical functions. The phlebotomist will collect blood using good judgment and according to policies and procedures, ensuring proper patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, and transport. They will also monitor patients post-collection and review standard checklists for potential adverse reactions. Additionally, the role may include performing EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions, as well as providing reception and clerical duties at the Specimen Collection center front desk. Maintaining supply inventory and completing required training are also key aspects of the position. The role emphasizes teamwork and good communication skills with co-workers.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

Pediatric Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Inpatient Phlebotomy experience preferred, and training will also be provided.
Graduate of a training Program that includes phlebotomy skills, with demonstrated and acceptable competency in phlebotomy preferred.

Responsibilities

Collect specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood samples, urine, and sputums, and perform nasal swabs per orders.
Explain safety protocols and procedures to patients.
Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and according to policies and procedures.
Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification card.
Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
Select appropriate specimen collection equipment and an appropriate site for blood collection.
Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture.
Collect specimens according to the order of draw.
Ensure adequate mixing of specimens in tubes by inversion or mechanical device.
Label specimens in the presence of patients.
Package and transport specimens.
Monitor patients and ensure bleeding has stopped, and the patient is stable.
Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential adverse reactions such as syncope, and latex allergy.
Maintain patient privacy and follow all HIPAA guidelines.
Provide EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions with training or competency review.
Provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations serviced by Laboratory Support Services with training or competency review.
Provide reception and associated clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, including Fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in the queue.
Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training.
Work in collaboration with and practice good teamwork and communication skills with co-workers.
