About The Position

Join the team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories, where the mission is to provide exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. As a Phlebotomist, you will be a friendly face collecting samples for analysis in state-of-the-art labs. The role primarily focuses on the responsibilities of a Phlebotomist II, which includes independently performing venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults. This position involves obtaining and processing blood specimens, utilizing computer systems for patient registration and billing, and performing overall specimen accessioning and processing. Phlebotomists at Geisinger support a varied patient population in an inpatient setting and are also involved in troubleshooting physician orders and aiding patients. Geisinger considers candidates for Phlebotomist roles I, II, and III, with different experience levels. Eligible candidates may qualify for a $5,000 sign-on bonus and new shift differentials.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Successful completion of initial and subsequent competency exams
  • Less than 1 year of experience (for Phlebotomist I)
  • 1-2 years of experience (for Phlebotomist II)
  • Graduation from Geisinger's School of Phlebotomy Program (as an alternative to 1-2 years experience for Phlebotomist II)

  • Related work experience
  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar
  • Military experience (US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties)
  • ASCP Certification (required for Phlebotomist III)
  • Internal preceptor course (required for Phlebotomist III)

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients.
  • Independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults.
  • Obtain blood specimens.
  • Process specimens for analysis.
  • Utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, and perform overall specimen accessioning and processing.
  • Explain the blood drawing process and show a comforting attitude toward patients.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.
  • Recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  • Resolve or refer problems as appropriate.
  • Perform testing and records Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.
  • Follow established reporting procedures as appropriate.
  • Record and report problems and solutions as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Know and abide by related policies and procedures including compliance policies.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
  • Troubleshoot physician orders.
  • Aid patients.
