About The Position

This job description outlines the essential functions of the Phlebotomist role within the Laboratory department. The position involves a variety of tasks including patient reception, chart processing for HIMS, performing phlebotomy for inpatients, outpatients, and external facilities. The role requires strong organizational skills for recording information, communicating test orders to technologists, performing phlebotomy duties, and managing billing for laboratory procedures and faxing reports. Collaboration with other phlebotomists, student aides, and technologists is essential. The Phlebotomist will have frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nursing personnel, HIMS personnel, and salespersons, and will be responsible for communicating pertinent information to laboratory staff and the director.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy, including therapeutic phlebotomy, venipuncture, and finger sticks.
  • Label, process, and distribute specimens.
  • Interpret physician orders and collect appropriate samples.
  • Prepare request slips correctly.
  • Schedule outpatients when appropriate.
  • Relay test requests to technologists.
  • Manage Quest send outs, supplies, and invoices.
  • Distribute test results to nursing stations and physicians/ordering providers.
  • Call or fax results when appropriate.
  • Enter laboratory orders into the system.
  • Maintain daily accession logs.
  • Order supplies as necessary to maintain stock.
  • Maintain a clean and well-stocked laboratory, including collection trays, drawing chairs, pipettes, and glassware.
  • File and shred documents as necessary.
  • File results to charts and Medical Records, including micro or send outs.
  • Practice confidentiality at all times.
  • Consult resource persons when needed.
  • Remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Communicate all pertinent information to supervisor or co-workers.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in accepting assignments/changes.
  • Interact harmoniously with all staff.
