About The Position

Lincoln Internal Medicine is looking for a dependable, patient-focused PRN Phlebotomist to support our clinic laboratory. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys patient interaction, takes pride in accuracy, and wants flexible/as-needed work in a professional outpatient clinic setting. As a PRN Phlebotomist, you will help our laboratory obtain, handle, and process specimens accurately and safely while creating a calm, respectful experience for patients. The right candidate will be detail-oriented, kind with patients, comfortable following laboratory procedures, and able to work well with providers, clinical staff, and reference labs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have or obtain working knowledge of blood draw tubes, specimen requirements, specimen handling, and specimen integrity.
  • Must be able or willing to be trained on swab collection, urine and stool specimen instructions, laboratory procedures, and applicable COLA requirements.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety guidelines, PPE requirements, bloodborne pathogen safety, needlestick safety, and proper disposal of specimens and supplies.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology helpful.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, providers, coworkers, and outside offices or labs.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to identify and help resolve problems while maintaining a calm, patient-focused approach.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for portions of the shift and perform routine phlebotomy duties safely.
  • Must be able to assist patients with transfers when applicable, including from chairs or wheelchairs.
  • Must be able to provide appropriate patient support related to specimen collection, including restroom-related collection assistance when necessary.
  • Must be able to use required PPE and follow safety precautions when handling specimens, bodily fluids, contaminated materials, and laboratory supplies.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy course, certificate, or program preferred.
  • Prior phlebotomy experience in a clinic, laboratory, or healthcare setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Verify each patient using the two-identifier system before specimen collection.
  • Review requested tests and clarify unusual, incomplete, or unclear orders by contacting the appropriate physician office, outside provider office, or reference lab.
  • Collect blood specimens by venipuncture using proper aseptic technique, OSHA safety standards, PPE, and needlestick safety protocols.
  • Collect swab specimens according to laboratory procedure, including testing such as flu, COVID, strep cultures, and respiratory panels.
  • Obtain the correct specimen type and sufficient specimen volume while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Instruct patients on the proper process for urine and stool specimen collection when needed.
  • Route, label, handle, and process specimens according to laboratory procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA/HITECH requirements.
  • Keep phlebotomy stations, urine transfer areas, specimen areas, and the laboratory waiting area clean, organized, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Monitor patient flow in laboratory waiting areas and communicate with team members to keep visits moving smoothly.
  • Assist with clerical and laboratory support tasks as directed.
  • Follow applicable CLIA, COLA, OSHA, safety, and internal laboratory procedures.
  • Report safety or compliance concerns promptly to the Laboratory Supervisor, Safety Coordinator, Compliance Officer, or appropriate leader.
  • Participate in required staff, laboratory, safety, compliance, and training meetings as assigned.
  • Complete competency testing after training and at 30, 60, and 90 days, six months, and annually thereafter.
  • Contribute to a team environment that supports patient satisfaction, communication, and problem solving.
