About The Position

This is an informational job posting only. We fill this role often and are continuously looking for exceptional candidates. The role involves assisting with the collection of blood and blood products under the guidance of the Medical Director and Regional Collections Manager. The phlebotomist will ensure a positive and comfortable experience for donor volunteers, making them feel valued and informed. Training will be provided in blood drawing procedures, managing donor information, and maintaining infection control practices. The goal is to create a welcoming environment that encourages donors to become lifelong supporters and to ensure adherence to policies and standards set by NYBC, the FDA, and other organizations.

Requirements

  • Ability and desire to learn medical procedures; comprehensive training will be provided.
  • Must successfully complete all prescribed training programs.
  • Comfortable working in a hospital-like environment.
  • Comfortable handling blood products with care and professionalism.
  • High level of warmth and care toward the donor with exceptional bedside manners.
  • Must have a car, a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to travel.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including availability from 6 am - 8:30 pm and rotating weekends.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to work with computers.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Full hand use and depth perception needed.

  • Background in healthcare, phlebotomy, or customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding customer service at mobile units and/or donor centers.
  • Greet donors warmly, educate first-time donors on the process to ease anxiety.
  • Guide donors throughout the donation process, ensuring a smooth and positive experience.
  • Perform blood draws and collect specimens following established protocols and procedures.
  • Operate and maintain medical equipment for blood collection, including cleansing, inspecting, and storing equipment.
  • Verify and update donor information in the BECS system to create barcodes and inform relevant staff.
  • Help donors understand the best type of donation for them based on inventory needs and capacity.
  • Explain the benefits of automated donations (plasma, platelets, auto-red cells).
  • Adhere to infection control practices, including blood and body fluid precautions, isolation techniques, and proper disposal of used supplies.
  • Perform clerical tasks to support blood drawing activities and maintain required records and documentation.
  • Educate donors on the importance of blood donation and ensure their experience is positive and encouraging.
