About The Position

A Phlebotomist at MyMichigan Health - Alpena ensures a patient is comfortable while collecting a quality specimen that provides accurate results to assist the provider in the patient's diagnosis and treatment.

Requirements

  • Requires the completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical (on-the-job) experience or has equivalent education or experience.
  • Must know and practice universal precaution procedures in the performance of daily duties.
  • Must use electronic data processing equipment in performing daily duties.
  • Must be able to work with neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Nursing student with at least 1 completed semester in the nursing program who are willing to obtain their phlebotomy certification with in 12 months of hire or transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Greets the public in a professional, cheerful manner.
  • Answers telephone and directs inquiries to appropriate persons.
  • Draws blood properly with minimum discomfort and rarely misses a vein on a patient.
  • Positively identifies and labels specimens by following patient and specimen identification policies. Uses the computer to register and accession specimens.
  • Knows various needles, anticoagulants, special handling, and preparation of tests that are performed.
  • Assists with inventory and putting away supplies.
  • Assists with specimen processing.
  • Performs other related miscellaneous duties.
  • Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement as required by the Hospital and the job description.
  • Understands and is accountable for the Hospital's customer service standards.
