About The Position
The Phlebotomist performs in-house Lab testing, oversees operations of the lab and handles the preparation of lab specimens sent to the reference lab. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with staff, patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of phlebotomy.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the administration of their duties in addition to performing phlebotomy techniques.
- Current Mississippi State Licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Assn.
- Knowledge of basic clinical operations.
- Must demonstrate skills of written and oral communication.
- Ability to comprehend and perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Able to prioritize work.
- Accepts constructive criticism.
- Ability to prepare reports and follow-up as necessary.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screen and physical assessment.
Responsibilities
- Performs in-house testing.
- Oversees operations of the lab.
- Prepares lab specimens for the reference lab.
- Keeps lab neat, clean, and organized.
- Files lab reports in a timely manner.
- Adheres to universal precautions.
- Accurately collects lab specimens.
- Uses proper reporting of lab tests.
- Performs venipuncture using correct technique.
- Operates lab equipment.
- Runs lab controls daily.
- Follows up on outstanding test results by contacting the reference lab.
- Exhibits proper handwashing technique.
- Monitors lab supplies to prevent shortages.
- Instructs patients on blood drawing procedures.
- Ensures the lab area is never left unattended.
- Demonstrates awareness of basic charting procedures.
- Promptly draws patient blood as ordered by the provider.
- Communicates adequately with the nurse manager.
- Displays professionalism in communicating with providers.
- Demonstrates flexibility in job duties.
- Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
- Verifies timecard at the end of each pay period.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Floats to other clinic locations as needed to support operational needs, ensure adequate coverage, and maintain quality patient care.
- Completes required IT/Security trainings prior to the deadline.
