The VCH Laboratory Pathology department is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy with minimal guidance. This role involves accessioning specimens, packaging materials for external labs, and providing excellent customer service. The Phlebotomist will work closely with laboratory staff, medical staff, and external customers, handling telephone inquiries and resolving basic issues. This position is crucial to Vanderbilt Health's reputation for excellence in allied health services, which are vital for patient referrals and care.

Requirements

  • Relevant Work Experience: 1 year
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Phlebotomy (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of phlebotomy in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering products and services using phlebotomy without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
  • Specimen Collection (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of specimen collection in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering specimen collection services without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
  • Quality Assurance (Novice): Has provided continuous analysis and evaluation of assignment work processes, constantly striving for improvement in the way tasks and activities are accomplished by questioning their value to the process and contributing creative solutions. Has participated in the process of establishing, communicating and monitoring standards for quality and excellence. Demonstrates the ability to actually work on and improve a current business process, product or service.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient check-in and updates patient information in the registration system.
  • Places manual orders and sends them to Specimen Receiving or the Patient Service Specialist for accessioning.
  • Instructs patients on proper collection of urine, stool, sputum, and saliva specimens, and provides necessary supplies.
  • Administers oral solutions for glucose tolerance testing according to established training.
  • Identifies the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens.
  • Explains blood draw procedures to patients, answers questions, and assists patients, co-workers, and internal customers.
  • Verifies patient identification with two identifiers before and after venipuncture.
  • Labels tubes immediately following venipuncture in front of the patient.
  • Maintains specimen integrity using aseptic technique and following department procedures.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary sticks according to age-specific guidelines.
  • Processes specimens for laboratory testing, including centrifuging and aliquoting blood samples.
  • Packages and stores specimens appropriately for transport using guidance from lab test directories.
  • Takes responsibility for safety checks and supply management.
  • Assists with training, including acting as a preceptor for students and new hires.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
