About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Clinical Services and with supervision from the Clinical Lab Scientists, this position is responsible for serving as the laboratory phlebotomist and provides support to the overall laboratory operations and clinical staff. Duties include performing a variety of standard clinical assistance work and functioning as the primary laboratory receptionist and phlebotomist. This position prepares media and reagents, assists in preventive maintenance and quality control in accordance with CLIA regulations (Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments of 1988) for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. This position will be a 1-year temporary with the possibility of extension.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and equipment, including laboratory safety and quality assurance practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current recognized standards and terminology to perform within the scope of practice.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy using the appropriate equipment including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Ability to collect required specimens for and perform assigned CLIA-waived testing with required attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to use applicable equipment and materials in performing laboratory tests.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of related experience in a health care setting or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Possess (or ability to obtain by date of hire) and maintain certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.
