About The Position

Collects clinical laboratory specimens and performs tasks associated with patient registration, order entry, and specimen processing with general supervision. Performs waived testing with general supervision. Provides logistical support to team members and general assistance to customers. This role requires the ability to perform venipunctures, collect other specimens, and explain proper collection procedures. The phlebotomist will clarify orders, perform registration, process specimens, and promote HNL Lab Medicine’s values with excellent customer relations. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of specimen requirements, managing supply inventory, and ensuring a meticulous work area are also key responsibilities. The position may involve assisting with training new staff, participating in continuous improvement and education programs, and providing on-call and mobile services. Travel to sites within 25 miles may be required. Per diem work is determined by department needs and employee availability, with flexibility being an expectation.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
6 months to 2 years related experience and/or training preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Knowledge of Word Processing software.
Must be accessible to appropriate and reliable transportation to perform essential duties and responsibilities.
Certification required by the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support to include adult, child and infant. Certification will be provided if needed.

Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently may be required based on service location.

Responsibilities

Performs venipunctures.
Collects other specimens and explains the proper collection procedures for specimens provided by the patient.
Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements when appropriate.
Performs registration; requisitions lab orders and verifies billing information.
Process, store, and transport specimens according to the laboratory requirements.
Actively promotes HNL Lab Medicine’s values and exhibits excellent customer relations in anticipating customer needs in all interactions.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of changes in specimen requirements and collection devices.
Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and ensures a meticulous work area.
Assists in the orientation, training, and mentoring new staff members.
Participates in the Continuous Service Improvement and continuing education programs.
Properly records and documents necessary expense reimbursement (Mileage Reimbursement) following established electronic processes.
Provides on-call and mobile service as required.
Required to travel to sites within 25 miles other than base location as needed for coverage.
