About The Position

The Phlebotomist Trainer is responsible for the training of new and existing staff members by demonstrating and explaining all relevant policies and procedures. Reports progress to the phlebotomy supervisor/manager on a weekly basis (or more frequently as needed). Collects clinical laboratory specimens and performs waived testing and other tasks associated with patient registration, order entry and specimen processing without supervision and in accordance with HNL policies and procedures. Provides logistical leadership to team members and general assistance to customers. This role is required to travel to multiple locations using personal vehicle, as required. Trainer will be required to work at the location of the trainee or at a designated HNL facility or client location for their scheduled hours; effective time management and scheduling flexibility required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • 5 years phlebotomy experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • CPR Certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Fully executes all job duties of the Phlebotomist and Senior Phlebotomist.
  • Provides training and coaching for new, existing phlebotomy employees and both internal and external students during clinical rotations.
  • Utilizes and applies the department’s official training checklist for new team members.
  • Creates, maintains and updates training materials and manuals as needed.
  • Ensures all training checklist items are completed appropriately and all initial performance goals and competencies are met with acceptable proficiencies.
  • Submits completed checklists to phlebotomy supervisor/manager for final approval to release new employees for independent work.
  • Maintains an up-to-date working knowledge of all department procedures and policies, as well as knowledge of changes in specimen requirements and collection devices, for accurate training purposes.
  • Collaborates with Phlebotomy Training Management and other team members to develop innovative training processes for HNL.
  • Provides assistance and actively participates in the operations of the School of Phlebotomy.
  • Serves as a liaison between Patient Service Centers (PSCs)/Diagnostic Care Centers (DCCs)/nursing homes and phlebotomy management.
  • Alerts appropriate management teams of policies/procedures/behavior requiring corrective action.
  • Monitors departmental activities to improve efficiency or specimen/service quality.
  • Presents a friendly, approachable and professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Provides quality service to patients.
  • Responds to customer inquiries for information regarding specimen requirements and testing schedules.
  • Provides constructive feedback to new hires and students during training, offering guidance for their improvement and development.
  • Participates in the Continuous Service Improvement and continuing education programs.
  • Properly records and documents necessary expense reimbursement (Mileage Reimbursement) following established electronic processes.
  • Required to travel to all locations, to include nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, patient homes, DCC, and PSC centers. This could occur with minimal notice and during all operational hours.
