About The Position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practices, aiming to enhance patient and caregiver engagement. This role functions within a professional medical environment and is part of a dynamic team, handling a workload that can range from fast-paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics. The Phlebotomist performs specimen collection using various techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections from patients of all acuities, including newborns and intensive care patients. They are at the forefront of patient care, adhering to and enforcing standards for laboratory compliance and safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment. Caregivers in this role will communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy. Opportunities for growth and skill development include patient/client registrations, participation in CODE response teams, training as a clinical coach or preceptor, specimen processing, participation in special projects, quality assurance processes, waived testing, technical writing, downtime planning, and continuous improvement projects. This position requires organizational skills, the ability to navigate multiple computer systems, teamwork, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Candidates must be resilient and able to manage stressful situations professionally. The role also requires the ability to take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations. Advanced collection and troubleshooting techniques may also be performed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, Preferred.
• Twelve months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor, Preferred.
• Organizational skills.
• Ability to navigate multiple computer systems.
• Ability to work well as a member of a team.
• Resilient and able to manage stressful situations professionally.
• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
• Frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
• Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
• Pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items.
• Navigating crowded and busy rooms.
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing.
• Perform specimen collection using venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections.
• Collect specimens from patients of various acuities, including Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient.
• Adhere to and enforce standards for laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
• Adhere to personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings.
• Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members.
• Demonstrate empathy during every interaction.
• Perform advanced collection and troubleshooting techniques such as bilateral nares or non-standard kit collection.
• Take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
