Requirements

  • Phlebotomy Skills / Experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Fine motor skills necessary to operate the computer and laboratory equipment
  • The ability to stand up most of the day, stretch repeatedly over the counter and lift loads of less than 10 pounds
  • Good communication skills
  • Problem solving ability
  • Independent judgment and initiative
  • Ability to prioritize and develop workflow
  • Ability to perform other assigned tasks

Responsibilities

  • Performing phlebotomy and point of care testing as part of daily laboratory operations.
  • Collecting viable and appropriate specimens from patients.
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation for specimen collection and tracking.
  • Sending specimens to reference laboratories for testing not performed in-house.
  • Maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Ensuring all supplies are viable before use in patient testing.
  • Rotating stock to use the oldest material first.
  • Guaranteeing adherence to safety procedures outlined in the safety manual.
  • Ensuring proper disposal of medical waste.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment (waiting room, patient restrooms, phlebotomy draw areas, and laboratory).
  • Performing authorized point of care tests requiring skills commensurate with education, training, experience, and technical abilities.
  • Following laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Maintaining records of proficiency testing samples.
  • Adhering to quality control policies and documenting calibrations and maintenance.
  • Following corrective action policies and procedures when test systems deviate from acceptable performance levels.
  • Identifying problems that may affect test performance or reporting and either correcting them or notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Documenting all corrective actions taken.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the laboratory manager.
