About The Position

The Phlebotomist works closely with Physicians, Nursing Staff and Clerical Staff. The Phlebotomist provides clinical expertise to ensure all patients receive high quality, efficient care when having their blood drawn or in processing a lab sample. The Phlebotomist displays a team cohesiveness. This position is mainly as a phlebotomist but if you have a CMA certificate we would train in those duties as well.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification completed every 2 years.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications and tests including knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness, and infection control policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and comprehension of workplace medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and workplace terminology.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, clinic policy and the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality, including abiding by the minimum necessary access and disclosure.
  • Ability to pay close attention detail of a project or task. Must verify clinical lab test orders and bring discrepancies to the attention of the appropriate clinical staff. Identify patient using 2 identifiers prior to any draw/injection.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Ability to work independently in high volume, fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.
  • Communication is essential to this position. Communication will occur between all departments and positions to ensure proper patient service. This position requires the ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents, the ability to talk to others to convey information effectively and the ability to effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Interpersonal skills – including coordination, instructing, negotiation, persuasion, service orientation and social perceptiveness.
  • Time Management skills- Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Deciphering best method for obtaining blood sample depending on the specific patient.
  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Must be able to work standard office equipment; computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
  • Work as part of a team and collaborate with co-workers. Good communication, close working relationship with MD’s/PA’s/ARNP’s/Ancillary staff.
  • Frequent use of computer, keyboard, copy and fax machine, scanner, printer and phone.
  • Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of forty to fifty (40-50) pounds without assistance.
  • Prolonged repetitive movements of hands, fingers and arms for typing and/or writing during work shift
  • Must be able to handle high stress situations with multiple tasks having similar deadlines.
  • There is frequent reaching, handling of equipment/instruments while attending to the patient’s needs.
  • Ability to read and view fine print.
  • Work environment is inside, clean and that of a professional medical office.
  • Normally working in climate-controlled environment.
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
  • Occasional contact with aggressive or combative patients.
  • Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for your protection and the patients.
  • Possible exposure to sharp objects and instruments.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an approved Phlebotomy training course preferred.
  • CPT and/or CNA Certification and job-related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain blood specimens from patients per laboratory orders.
  • Be able to perform with great accuracy Venipunctures.
  • Process medical laboratory tests and documents results.
  • Complete education for and administer appropriate immunizations and Depo-Provera medication ordered by physicians.
  • Organize laboratory, including general cleaning, upkeep, and re-stocking of supplies via Kanban system.
  • Dispose of contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies.
  • Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.
  • Wear PPE for patient and self-protection when appropriate.
  • Serve as back-up for clinical team members (as needed) by controlling patient flow and performing tasks as requested by the clinical staff or provider.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Actively participate in employee orientation, ongoing in-service programs, staff meetings, continuous quality improvement, and periodic performance/protocol evaluations and development.
  • Maintain current knowledge base by completion of mandatory continuing education.
  • Scan outside results into EMR chart as needed.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments via steam sterilization per WHS policy.
