About The Position

Works under the direct supervision of pharmacists performing clerical tasks, drug distribution activities, computerized order entry, and other medication management duties as authorized by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiner's laws, rules and regulations. Prepares medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, and count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications. May review and document patient's arrival medication assuring appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • High school graduate
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days
  • National Certified Pharmacy Tech Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) (United States of America) within 1 Year or National Certified Pharmacy Tech National Healthcareer Association (NHA) (United States of America) within 1 Year
  • Certified Pharmacy Tech Iowa Board of Pharmacy (United States of America) within 1 Year
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Trainee Iowa Board of Pharmacy (United States of America) Upon Hire
  • Maintains valid licensure/certification/registration through the Iowa Board of Pharmacy is required.
  • Registered by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
  • Nationally certified required within one year of hire if not already certified (at employee's expense).
  • May require additional competencies based on accreditation, including Specialty Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.
  • Establish and maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients.
  • Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs.
  • Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests.
  • Prepack bulk medicines, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and type and affix labels.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations according to written prescriptions.
  • Clean, and help maintain, equipment and work areas, and sterilize glassware according to prescribed methods.
  • Price and file prescriptions that have been filled.
  • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications in current inventory, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
