About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician will provide services such as reading and interpreting prescriptions and medication orders written by medical staff, selection, and retrieval of medications of correct strength and dosage form prescribed, transcribe prescription data to labels using computer systems, prepare prescriptions for review by a pharmacist prior to dispensing, give pertinent patient instructions when appropriate; complete stock medication orders as instructed by the pharmacist. The pharmacy technician is expected to wear professional clothing while on duty. The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing. Uniform will consist of Navy, Royal, or Ceil Blue scrubs.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
  • Must have a certificate of training for Pharmacy Technician services from an approved state program.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of Pharmacy Technician experience.
  • Must have experience with computers and typing skills.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the staff pharmacist in ordering, stocking, storing, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications
  • Maintain pharmacy areas in a clean and orderly fashion consistent with departmental safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Assist the pharmacist in maintaining stock of up-to-date medications (checking for outdates per policy) in the main pharmacy, satellite camp, crash carts, emergency bags, and Automated Dispensing Systems.
  • Assist the Pharmacist with maintaining stock of forms as needed and updating Pill Line medication cards for inmates, as well as filing Medication Administration Records into the Medical Record.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in preparing unit dose or pre-packaged medications.
  • Complete and maintain competency as indicated by the ability to complete the Pharmacy Competency Module while maintaining knowledge of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Formulary and any changes to this document.
  • Maintain the narcotics count and the needle and syringe inventories.
  • Maintain and re-stock adequate supplies for the Medication dispensing Machine and perform audits of the Automated Dispensing System.
  • Possess a working knowledge and maintain technical computer skills pertaining to pharmacy issues.
  • Must participate in Improving Organizational Performance Data and Quality Assurance Activities as directed by the Pharmacist or HSA.
  • Perform minor clerical duties, such as use of BOP electronic medical record, computer documentation and scheduling, scanning documents, filing, typing, call-outs, institutional memorandums, answering phones, scheduling patients, and maintaining stock records.
