About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician, under the direction of a pharmacist, is responsible for delivering medications, performing unit dose activities such as filling medication orders and cassettes, updating ADTs, handling floor stock orders, and processing outpatient prescriptions. They also conduct routine medication area inspections, maintain records for controlled substances, and utilize the pharmacy computer system. Additionally, the role involves IV/Admixture responsibilities, including labeling pre-mixed solutions, restocking supplies, preparing various parenteral solutions, and extemporaneous compounding. The technician will also perform administratively assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Requires successful completion of on-the-job training in each area of the department within the first six months of employment.
  • Registered Pharmacy technicians must maintain active status through Board of Pharmacy in the state(s) they work in.
  • For new applicants in PA, registration as Pharmacy Technician Trainee is required upon hire, must be board registered as Pharmacy Technician within 180 days of hire.
  • For new applicants in NJ, registration application must be filed within 10 days of hire date and the technician must be registered with the state board within 180 days of hire date.
  • Minimum of six months previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • PA: As of June 28, 2026, State Registration with PA Board of Pharmacy, as a Pharmacy Technician preferred upon hire.
  • NJ: State Registration with NJ Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician, preferred upon hire.
  • Pharmacy students registered as a Pharmacy Intern in PA do not need to also register as a Pharmacy Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Fills medications and IV orders from computer generated labels.
  • Fills and updates patient cassette drawers and exchanges cassette drawers.
  • Delivers medications to and picks up medications from patient care areas or uses the pneumatic tube system.
  • Credits returned patient medications.
  • Answers telephone/window and deals with visitors to the pharmacy appropriately.
  • Involves other pharmacy staff when appropriate.
  • Directs all drug information questions to a pharmacist.
  • Communicates in a courteous and professional manner utilizing proper etiquette.
  • Communicates all pertinent information to the technician on the next shift.
  • Prepares prepackaged medications under pharmacist supervision using proper technique.
  • Maintains appropriate log books and completes work within shift.
  • Prepares parenteral, admixture, anti-neoplastic and Home IV Therapy orders.
  • Extemporaneously compounds under pharmacist supervision using proper aseptic technique.
  • Keeps work area clean and neat and free of excess items.
  • Maintains adequate par levels.
  • Reviews, fills, delivers nursing floor stock and controlled substances.
  • Performs medication area inspections for all areas with medications.
  • Prepares outpatient prescriptions in accordance with federal and state pharmacy laws.
  • Maintains CD Module narcotic inventory, re-stocks CD Module and processes CD Module returns.
  • Delivers or retrieves medications when the supervising pharmacist views the situation as necessary.
  • Performs Transitional Care Unit (TCU) activities including filling new medication orders, medication cassettes and crediting medications.
  • Completes and maintains IV/Admixtures lab and departmental competencies.
  • Utilizes effective interpersonal communication skills while maintaining confidentiality of hospital information.
  • Addresses co-workers, nurses and others in a pleasant and cooperative manner.
  • Performs routine activities with minimal supervision.
  • Offers to provide additional help when needed.
  • Participates in training of new employees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
