About The Position

Attain the highest level of customer relations, expedite the processing of prescriptions and help to maintain the non-prescription aspects of the pharmacy department. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required (PTCB). All functions of duties of the certified pharmacy technician shall be performed under the direct supervision of the pharmacist on duty. The pharmacist on duty will be working in close proximity with the certified pharmacy technician to ensure adequate control or supervision and shall verify and document certified pharmacy technician work. The primary purpose of the certified pharmacy technician is to expedite the processing of prescriptions. The key to productivity is the ability of the certified pharmacy technician to initiate the necessary procedure to start the process of filling the prescription. Therefore, the certified pharmacy technician needs to be organized. The primary duties involve the preparatory functions that need to be accomplished in order for the pharmacist to fill the prescription. This role also involves accommodating customers when they arrive at the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions, which includes handling cash register transactions. Additionally, the technician will be involved in functions not directly related to the actual filling of prescriptions, such as processing third-party documents, organizing and filing prescriptions, restocking supplies, managing inventory, maintaining cleanliness, checking shelf life, and communicating with various parties including insurance companies and wholesale vendors.

  • Ability to initiate the necessary procedure to start the process of filling the prescription.
  • Must be organized.
  • Verify the name, address, and birth date of the person for whom the prescription is to be filled.
  • Verify the prescriber’s name (if illegible).
  • Adhere to cash register policies as set forth by the company.

Responsibilities

  • Receive new prescriptions from customers and verify customer information (name, address, birth date) and prescriber's name.
  • Obtain drug name or Rx number for prescription refills from customers.
  • Enter prescription information into the computer for processing new or refilled prescriptions.
  • Enter information into the computer to process electronic third-party claims for insurance payment.
  • Retrieve appropriate medication from stock.
  • Scan stock bottle to ensure correct medication and print prescription label.
  • Count tablets/capsules or pour liquids in appropriate quantities.
  • Place medications in appropriate containers and affix prescription labels.
  • Affix appropriate auxiliary labels.
  • Assist the pharmacist in preparing and reconstituting medications.
  • Answer the telephone and direct calls to the pharmacist for new prescriptions, medical questions, or judgmental decisions.
  • Accommodate customers picking up prescriptions, including cash register transactions.
  • Complete and process third-party documents.
  • Organize and file new prescriptions and patient profiles.
  • Restock and reorder supplies (vials, bags, printer labels, paper).
  • Manage inventory: receive drug orders, sticker items, restock shelves, verify shipments against invoices, report shorts to wholesaler, and report backordered items to the pharmacist.
  • Clean pharmacy shelves and work areas, maintaining a satisfactory state of cleanliness.
  • Check inventory for appropriate shelf life, pull expired or nearly expired items, catalog them, and return them for credit.
  • Assist the pharmacist by reordering items, ordering new items, and handling shorted and backordered items.
  • Communicate with the pharmacist and/or customer about item availability.
  • Communicate via telephone with support companies (third-party insurance, wholesale, software/hardware vendors).
  • Communicate with the pharmacy manager on progress and policies.
  • Consult regularly with the pharmacy manager or staff pharmacist to expedite prescription processing.
  • Maintain good company loyalty, set a good example, and project a positive attitude.
  • Maintain the highest level of customer relations.
  • Carry out daily housekeeping, cleanliness, and sanitation programs.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism in dress, personal appearance, and grooming.
  • Adhere to cash register policies.
