Type: Replacement Duration: Up to 12 months An exciting opportunity as a Temporary Full-Time, Registered Pharmacy Technician exists in the Pharmacy Services department reporting to the Pharmacy Manager. As an integral member of the Pharmacy team, the Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for the technical aspects of drug distribution and quality assurance. They are also responsible for supporting patient care activities with the Pharmacy Department. The Pharmacy Technician will strive to deliver quality patient care and enhance patient safety by ensuring the accuracy, quality, integrity and timeliness of pharmaceutical product preparation and release.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician program or bridging program
  • Current registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists is required
  • Previous experience in a health care environment, preferably hospital
  • Experience with unit dosing and IV admixture experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with Best Possible Medication History strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Work collaboratively as part of intra/inter professional teams
  • Good attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Completion of Epic and/or Willow Inventory training an asset
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures
  • The ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in an active work environment
  • Knowledge of and working experience with computer systems and applications
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record

Responsibilities

  • Independently interpret, process, fill and provide the final check for patient-specific medication orders
  • Monitor all patient profiles for patient allergies, drug interactions and other alerts upon order entry, and notify the pharmacist as appropriate
  • Receive, review and fill medication orders on a weekly basis
  • Obtain complete and accurate Best Possible Medication Histories from patients using a variety of information sources
  • Document patient’s Best Possible Medication History in their medical record
  • Consult and collaborate with healthcare team members as required to ensure seamless care
  • Replenish ward stock to patient care areas, utilizing central pharmacy automation including pharmacy information system and prepackaging machine
  • Perform unit dose drug distribution including the preparation and delivery of sterile and non-sterile medications
  • Issue and deliver narcotics/controlled drugs to the patient care areas as per legislative requirements
  • Manage the department's drug inventory control system (Epic-Willow Inventory) and maintain appropriate records in keeping with pharmacy regulations and established procedures
  • Promote medication and patient safety by reporting any issues with Epic-Willow and working with Clinical Applications team to resolve issues and optimize system
  • Receive, store, monitor and dispense investigational study drugs in compliance with trial protocols
  • Maintain narcotic records on site in compliance with regulations
  • Monitor drug supply from manufacturers and procurement services to help manage any drug recalls or shortages
  • Participate in project work as assigned by Pharmacy Manager
  • Provide mentorship to pharmacy students and/or pharmacy technician students
  • Provide administrative support when necessary
  • Assist Clinical Pharmacists as required
  • Other duties as assigned
