Assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This role involves accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. The Pharmacy Technician also assists with medication distribution, screens phone calls, and manages daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. They are responsible for completing documentation for controlled substances, performing nonsterile compounding and sterile IV admixture following USP standards, and inspecting medication storage areas. Additional duties may include completing medication admission histories, assisting in training other technicians, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and supporting area leaders. The role also involves patient demographic information gathering, data entry, insurance verification, label generation, cashiering, and developing competence in third-party billing functions. Depending on the facility, they may obtain immunization certification and perform immunizations under pharmacist supervision, and may be required to operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
