About The Position

The Pharmacy Department at CHEO operates 24 hours daily, 7 days a week. Pharmacy technicians are expected to work day, evening, weekend and night shifts. Under a pharmacist’s supervision the Pharmacy Technician performs all the tasks defined in the NAPRA Standards Practice for Pharmacy Technician practice from the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP). They keep up to date and follow workflow processes of the pharmacy department and the Hospital based on pharmacy standards and regulatory requirements. They maintain accurate computerized patient profiles, dispense, verify and deliver inpatient and outpatient prescriptions. They also distribute and maintain inventory of all pharmaceuticals, including formulary, non-formulary, controlled substances, SAP, and drug studies. The role involves maintaining stock of pharmaceuticals, labels, containers, and other supplies within the pharmacy work areas, and recording and reporting any shortages on the appropriate order list and to the pharmacy buyer. They maintain stock of pharmaceuticals and supplies on clinical wards and ambulatory clinics as required, and ensure non-expired pharmaceuticals availability and participate in the rotation of stocks in the pharmacy and on clinical wards and ambulatory clinics. The technician prioritizes, initiates and completes the Patients Best Possible Medication History and highlights any discrepancies to the pharmacist. They keep work areas clean, organized, and functional, and maintain equipment and automation in good working condition, problem-solving as appropriate and reporting issues to appropriate pharmacy personnel. They report product defects and medication errors to the pharmacist and complete incident reports. The role includes maintaining records of pharmacy related activities and participating in statistical reports for the Pharmacy Department. They participate in the pharmacy technician work rotation fulfilling the responsibilities and tasks of each assigned area including weekend and night shifts. They also participate in staff and pharmacy technician meetings, departmental planning and communication activities, and special project assignments as required. The position involves participating in the training and orientation of new personnel in technical aspects of the Pharmacy Department and participating in departmental quality assurance activities. They work cooperatively with all colleagues, promoting and maintaining harmonious inter and intra departmental relationships, and maintain professional conduct and standards in all aspects of their work and when interacting with hospital staff and the public. They may cover Kid Care Pharmacy as required and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Vulnerable Record Check (Essential)
Graduate of an accredited college Pharmacy Technician Program (Essential)
Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (Essential)
Maintains competency on all equipment and automation (Essential)
Maintains sterile and non-sterile certifications yearly (Essential)

Responsibilities

Participates in the pharmacy technician work rotation fulfilling the responsibilities and tasks of each assigned area including weekend and night shifts
