About The Position

We’re hiring a Pharmacy Technician/Authorization Specialist to support medication access and authorization workflows for a mission‑driven, nonprofit healthcare organization recognized as one of the Nation’s Top 100 Places to Work. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, working on the phone, and helping patients navigate insurance and pharmacy processes. This position is remote, but candidates must be within driving distance of San Diego and able to come onsite if internet or connectivity issues arise. Candidates must also have their own equipment and reliable, high‑speed internet.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Active CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) certification
  • TCH – Pharmacy Technician Certificate / Healthcare Technology Specialist Certificate
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial pharmacy plans
  • Comfort working on the phone and managing payer or pharmacy outreach
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with pharmacy prior authorizations
  • Experience handling medication appeals
  • Background in pharmacy services, medical billing, or insurance authorizations

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with insurance companies, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and specialty pharmacies to resolve coverage issues
  • Initiate, submit, track, and follow up on pharmacy prior authorizations to prevent treatment delays
  • Monitor authorization status and proactively address missing information or payer requirements
  • Document authorization outcomes, approvals, denials, and appeals in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Assist with medication appeals by gathering clinical documentation and completing required payer forms
  • Educate patients on authorization status, coverage limitations, copays, and available assistance programs
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of payer policies, formularies, and authorization requirements
  • Support scheduling, referral processing, phone coverage, billing inquiries, and medication history reconciliation
