Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician procures, prepares, packages, distributes, and disposes of medications and pharmaceutical supplies to assist the department in providing quality pharmaceutical care for all patients. They maintain an established inventory of drugs and commonly used supplies, re-ordering and stocking items upon delivery to ensure immediate availability. The technician maintains competency and follows departmental, USP, DEA, and FDA guidelines when repackaging and compounding pharmaceutical products. They properly operate, troubleshoot, monitor, and clean departmental automation and equipment, ensuring pharmacist product verification and facilitating the timely and appropriate distribution of medications to maintain product integrity. The role involves maintaining accurate records and patient profiles, including charging and crediting, and responding timely to customer needs by answering phone calls, receiving and distributing messages, and triaging requests appropriately. Understanding and implementing appropriate time management and prioritization of tasks are crucial for ensuring timely and safe patient care. The technician also assists with operational support functions, including minor housekeeping activities and department cleaning/disinfecting/decontaminating standards to maintain the work area. They conduct regular quality assurance inspections focused on TJC requirements, including the examination of product integrity and expiration. Maintaining competency and following departmental, OSHA, USP, and EPA guidelines for safely and accurately handling, preparing, distributing, and disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous products is essential. Participation in professional activities and organizations is encouraged to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. All required training and competency assessments must be completed in a timely fashion, and attendance at educational in-services is expected. The technician may assist in the orientation and training of new personnel and serve as a resource for less experienced staff, providing technical information and guidance in pharmacy techniques and policies to ensure efficient, quality service. Other duties may be assigned or requested.
