About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a 50% Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join their team. This position involves technical activities of dispensing areas, direct patient interaction in hospital rooms, and collaboration with hospital unit staff. The role supports the development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, with potential for functional supervision. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. The position involves 8-hour shifts scheduled between 7:00 am and 8:30 pm, with occasional hours outside this timeframe and rotating weekends (up to every other). Hours may support both pediatric and adult ambulatory care operations at a UI Health Care central fill pharmacy. The department will hire either as a Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, depending on candidate qualifications.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  • Registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy at the time of hire.
  • For Certified Technician: National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • For Trainee Technician: All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient/customer service.
  • Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
  • Conduct interviews with patients or their representatives to collect and record patient profile information.
  • Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status.
  • Determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check.
  • Triage prescriptions to the appropriate team, recognizing workflow patterns for effective triage.
  • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize and maintain ScriptPro Robot Fill cells/cassettes, including cleaning cells/cassettes, mapping brand changes/assigning drugs to cells, returning unwanted prescriptions to cells, and performing daily maintenance.
  • Fill/refill prescriptions, reading labels for accuracy and correcting as needed.
  • Label and package the correct medication.
  • Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients.
  • Answer the dedicated prescription refill telephone line.
  • Generate prescription refill labels.
  • Verify address for prescriptions to be mailed and the date medication is needed.
  • Fill out call checks and note pickup time or date to be mailed.
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities, including returning to stock medications not picked up by patients and ordering supplies from Hospital Stores.
  • Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  • Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to prescription dispensing (e.g., hard copies, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, prescription quality assurance audits).
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies, auditing dispensing records, resolving discrepancies on issuance forms.
  • Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only) for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration dates, and appropriate drug storage and references.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in the on-the-job training of new technicians.
  • Coordinate technical activities with other members of the team.
