About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join their team. This position operates under general pharmacist supervision, coordinating and performing technical activities in dispensing areas. It also involves direct patient interaction in hospital rooms, discretionary patient room entry, and collaboration with hospital unit staff. The role supports the development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, providing functional supervision as required. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. This position involves 8-hour shifts scheduled between 7:00 am and 8:30 pm, with occasional hours outside this timeframe as needed. It includes rotating weekends, up to every other weekend, and may support both pediatric and adult ambulatory care operations at a UI Health Care central fill pharmacy. The department will hire based on candidate qualifications, either as a Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Pharmacy Technician, Certified.

Requirements

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • For Trainee Technician: Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  • For Certified Technician: National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification (for Certified Technicians).
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program (for Certified Technicians).

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient/customer service.
  • Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
  • Conduct interviews with patients or their representatives to collect and record patient profile information.
  • Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status.
  • Determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check.
  • Triage prescriptions to the appropriate team, recognizing workflow patterns for effective triage.
  • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize and maintain ScriptPro Robot Fill cells/cassettes, including cleaning cells/cassettes, mapping brand changes/assigning drugs to cells, and returning unwanted prescriptions to cells.
  • Perform daily maintenance, fill/refill prescriptions, read labels for accuracy and correct as needed, and label and package the correct medication.
  • Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients.
  • Answer the dedicated prescription refill telephone line.
  • Generate prescription refill labels.
  • Verify address for prescriptions to be mailed and the date medication is needed.
  • Fill out call checks and note pickup time or date to be mailed.
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities, including returning to stock medications not picked up by patients and ordering supplies from Hospital Stores.
  • Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  • Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to prescription dispensing, such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies from internal sources, auditing records, resolving discrepancies on issuance forms, and conducting assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only).
  • Audit areas for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration dates, appropriate drug storage, and references.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in the on-the-job training of new technicians.
  • Coordinate technical activities with other members of the team.
