About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a part-time Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join their team. This position is under the general supervision of the Supply Chain Manager and involves coordinating and performing technical activities related to dispensing areas within the medication storeroom. The role requires maintaining inventory, dispensing medications, ensuring medication security, handling controlled substances, and communicating with various stakeholders. The department intends to hire at either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Pharmacy Technician, Certified classification, depending on the candidate's qualifications.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  • Certified Technician: Registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy at the time of hire
  • Certified Technician: National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Certified Technician: Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification
  • Trainee Technician: Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire
  • Trainee Technician: All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment
  • Experience: Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program

Responsibilities

  • Perform activities associated with inventory maintenance
  • Review pharmacy medication inventory for expired medications
  • Operate machinery required for bulk distribution of medications
  • Maintain inventory at appropriate levels according to established par levels
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas and return unused medications
  • Ensure medication security is maintained in patient care unit medication rooms, including the integrity of security measures and proper storage of medications
  • Maintain accurate controls and security regarding controlled substances, including inventory records
  • Generate, review, and maintain records related to medication distribution and dispensing
  • Maintain proper handling and worker safety precautions for hazardous medications and waste
  • Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel
  • Perform tasks as assigned by the pharmacist, technician supervisor, or Senior Certified technician
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness
  • Conduct and document monthly inspections of patient care areas
  • Assist in the training of hospital externship students, clinical clerkship rotations students, College of Pharmacy students, or other approved students or visitors
  • Communicate all patient and worker safety issues to management
  • Complete Patient Safety Net (PSN) reports if unsafe situations arise
