Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Obtain Pharmacy Assistant license in the state in which the employee works if available or necessary
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Excellent knowledge of drug names desired with the expectation of continuing education on new drugs

Responsibilities

  • Assist in medication preparation and distribution processes, including controlled substances management.
  • Manage medication storage areas using pharmacy automation.
  • Field and triage calls and questions regarding medication distribution within your scope of practice.
  • Apply pharmacy knowledge to identify variances and outliers in clinical practice.
  • Adhere to DEA, FDA, and state regulations.
  • Records prescription serial numbers and dispensing dates on original orders.
  • Initiates or accepts verbal/electronic refill authorizations from medical practitioners or agents, documenting all required information.
  • Types and affixes prescription labels or enters information into a computer for new/refill prescriptions, with pharmacist verification.
  • Reconstitutes prescription medications and performs retrieval, counting, or pouring of medications, always with pharmacist verification.
  • Measures, counts, pours, and prepares drugs for hospital inpatient dispensing, subject to full pharmacist verification of accuracy and safety.
  • Performs the prepackaging of drugs.
