As a full time IV Room Pharmacy Technician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, The pharmacy sterile compounding technician is cross trained in various locations including the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center IV room, ambulatory infusion clinic (AIC), outpatient cancer centers. All duties are performed independently by the technician under the supervision of a pharmacist. The technician must be able to rotate shifts days and evenings, alternate weekends.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Current California Pharmacy Technician license in good standing
  • Ability to speak, read and write the English language.
  • Individuals must be able to do calculations involving ratios, proportions and percentages.
  • Adequate computer skills as necessary to complete assigned projects and tasks

  • Proficiency in the operation of specialized equipment is necessary for assignment to specialized areas, i.e. OR/ER, Sterile Manufacturing, ACP, Storeroom, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Appropriately receives ordered medications and supplies.
  • Assures items received have a verifiable EPIC scannable barcode prior to placing in stock.
  • Ensures received items are reconciled with packing slips and that stat orders, satellite orders and Pyxis orders are filled accurately and timely.
  • Performs inventory control functions of medications including maintenance of par levels and appropriate documentation of stocking/removal in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs Tech-Check-Tech (TCT) according to policy.
  • Ensures proper storage and handling and assists in maintaining proper inventory records.
  • Prepares compounded sterile and/or non-sterile products according to P&P and SOPs, which include aseptic technique, if applicable; garbing, label preparation, control records/master formulation record and other record-keeping requirements, storage, handling, and waste management, transport, visual inspection, area, and equipment cleaning and maintenance, proper beyond use dating labeling, documents quality control/assurance activities, and completes annual recertification.
  • Performs labeling, packaging, obtaining medication and getting it ready for distribution and utilizes dispense prep to accurately prepare doses as required.
  • Performs controlled substance management accurately and according to regulation and accurately documents preparation on investigational drug product log sheets, if applicable.
  • Bills medications to third-party payors, including adjudication rejections and processing prior-authorizations; prescription savings programs, and through interdepartmental transfers, where applicable.
  • Delivers and distributes medications in an accurate and timely manner to appropriate care areas according to policies and procedures, while at the same time prioritizing workflow and maintaining required documentation.
  • Assures that medications are scanned for dispense tracking.
  • Acts as a liaison in medication-related problem solving for patient care units, including but not limited to narcotic discrepancies, automated dispensing cabinet/cart discrepancies and drug storage issues.
  • Uses pharmacy automation and technology to safely and effectively prepare, dispense, deliver and store medications and provide services to patients.
  • Communicates errors, near misses, clinical situations to co-workers, pharmacist, and supervisor to ensure medication safety and prevention of future errors.
  • Actively identifies methods and approaches to simplify work processes, decrease medication wastage, and increase the quality of services provided.
  • Demonstrates change management/engagement, such as actively supports organization and departmental initiatives and exhibits flexibility and adaptability to changes in workflows, responsibilities, work assignments, procedures, and new work situations.
  • Stays abreast with the medical center and departmental information, such as emails, minutes, and other items.
  • Participates in the education and training of pharmacy staff, residents, interns, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Adheres to state and federal regulations, professional and regulatory agency standards, and licensure requirements.
  • Assures required documentation is complete, accurate, and timely.
