About The Position

The outpatient pharmacy technician assists pharmacists in providing medication to inpatients and outpatients of all ages and helps the pharmacist in any routine duties not requiring professional judgment in our outpatient pharmacy. In accordance with state and federal regulations, assists the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy. Assists the pharmacist in the performance of other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with policies and procedures. Provides patient with excellent customer service by being greeting them and offering assistance to have a positive experience. Escalates concerns to the pharmacist if needed. Performs duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager or other Pharmacist including utilizing pharmacy systems to enter patient and drug information, ensuring information is entered correctly, filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting and pouring pharmaceutical drugs, verifying medicine is correct, and checking for possible interactions. Assists pharmacists in scheduling and maintaining work flow. Responsible and accountable for registering all related sales on assigned cash register, collects and handles cash as required. Assists in locating products. Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians. Processes (corrects and resubmits) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner, and performs other clerical duties, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager. Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of compliance requirements, and processes invoices, notifies pharmacist of shortages May participate in Med to Bed program to assist patients discharging from the hospital to acquire medications which requires meeting and speaking with patients. Reports, immediately, prescription errors to pharmacist on duty and adheres to Company policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program. DCH Standards: Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation. Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self. Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors and employees. Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors and employees. Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors and employees. Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet. Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures. All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Registered as a technician in the State of Alabama by the start date.
  • Must become pharmacy technician certified within 6 months from job start date through the pharmacy technician certification board.
  • Able to operate a computer, calculator, telephone, transfer carts, and other related pharmacy equipment.
  • Able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
