About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician Per Diem will make regularly scheduled rounds to assigned Nursing Units/treatment areas, delivering completed medications and picking up requisitions/medication orders to be processed. They will operate the Robot-Rx® in an efficient, error-free, and safe manner to pick medications as part of the dispensing process. The role involves delivering a complete set of patient medication cassettes to assigned Nursing stations daily and returning used cassettes to the Pharmacy. Additionally, the technician will assist the Pharmacist in preparing sterile products and, under direct supervision, prepare non-sterile products as assigned. Repackaging bulk medications into unit dose containers and performing the clerical portion of the controlled substance replenishment system are also key duties. The role contributes to inventory systems by making appropriate entries and conducting assigned inventories, performing duties of an Inventory Clerk as required. Maintaining and replacing the Hospital’s supply of medication in emergency carts, processing unit/department stock medication kits, and assisting in the training/orienting of new employees are also part of the responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions as well as to communicate with Pharmacists, Nurses and other Hospital Personnel required.
  • Requires competence in basic pharmaceutical nomenclature (generic vs. proprietary names), related mathematical skills and general pharmaceutical principles.
  • Requires the ability to recognize the professional nature of the Department of Pharmaceutical Services and to integrate appropriate standards to the performance of all tasks.
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a pharmacy technician in New Jersey, by the NJ Board of Pharmacy, within 180 days of hire. If not registered, must begin registration process immediately upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Make regularly scheduled rounds to assigned Nursing Units/treatment areas, delivers completed medications and picks up requisitions/medication orders to be processed.
  • Operate the Robot-Rx® in an efficient, error-free, and safe manner in order to pick medications as part of the dispensing process.
  • Deliver a complete set of patient medication cassettes to assigned Nursing stations on a daily basis and returns used cassettes to the Pharmacy.
  • Assist Pharmacist in the preparation of sterile products.
  • Prepare under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist, non-sterile products as assigned.
  • Repackage of bulk medications into unit dose containers utilizing (ex, tablets in vials and liquids in bottles) or other appropriate pharmacy repackaging equipment.
  • Perform the clerical portion of the controlled substance replenishment system for the pharmacist’s review and approval. Deliver controlled substances to assigned Nursing units/treatment areas under the Pharmacist's direction.
  • Contribute to the general maintenance of the Department's inventory systems by making appropriate entries and conducting assigned inventories. Perform duties of Inventory Clerk, as required.
  • Maintain, update, and replace the Hospital’s supply of medication in emergency carts.
  • Process all unit/department stock medication kits as per established procedures.
  • Assist in the training/orienting of new employees to selected aspects of the position.
