Pharmacy Technician Manager
About The Position
The Pharmacy Technician Manager leads and oversees the technical and supportive personnel of the Department of Pharmacy Services, ensuring their work complies with policies and procedures. The role helps plan, direct, monitor, and evaluate distributive pharmacy services for patient care areas. The manager organizes daily staffing and workflow, supports pharmacy technician duties when workload requires, and oversees staff development and performance. The position also coordinates automated dispensing systems, quality improvement activities, and pharmacy supply functions when needed, while ensuring compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards.
Requirements
- Must possess, or be eligible for, pharmacy technician licensure in the state of practice where applicable.
- Must hold pharmacy technician certification (CPhT or ExCPT).
- At least four years of relevant experience.
- At least two years of lead or supervisory experience in a healthcare or related setting.
- Good organizational, problem-solving, and computer skills.
- Training in compounding intravenous medications and preparing sterile products.
- Good written and verbal communication skills for interacting with staff at all levels, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
- Knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications, and automated dispensing systems.
Nice To Haves
- Five years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician in hospital pharmacy practice preferred.
- Three years of previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree and additional related experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provides leadership and direction to Pharmacy Technician staff, volunteers, and technician externs; promotes positive customer relations and a supportive team environment.
- Organizes and coordinates daily activities and schedules Pharmacy Technicians to ensure adequate, consistent service.
- Assesses pharmacy workflow and adjusts it as needed; performs Pharmacy Technician duties when workload dictates.
- Recruits, selects, hires, orients, and trains qualified personnel; participates in staff recognition and evaluates performance accurately, objectively, consistently, and on time.
- Communicates personnel issues to other members of the Pharmacy management group.
- Coordinates activities for Automated Dispensing Machines, including reports, quality assurance, installation of approved equipment and software, user issues, and inventory control.
- Applies performance-improvement principles and assists with Quality Improvement activities, Medication Utilization Evaluations, and policy and procedure development.
- Coordinates technician meetings and participates in in-service programs, committees, and other appropriate functions.
- Assumes or delegates Pharmacy Supply Coordinator duties where that position is not staffed, including inventory control, order submission, inter-departmental billing, recalls, returns of expired medications, and vendor coordination.
- Performs work in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
