About The Position

This position prepares and packages medication dosage forms for various routes of administration for patient use and in research protocols. The role involves preparing sterile intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy and total parenteral nutrition solutions, using aseptic technique. The Pharmacy Technician will distribute medications from the pharmacy in accordance with state and federal laws, maintain accurate dispensing records, and ensure efficient area operations to provide optimal customer service. This role operates under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and is responsible for maintaining appropriate inventory levels of medications, equipment, and supplies. Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required, along with fulfilling continuing education and competency requirements. If registered as a trainee, completion of the OSUWMC employer-based training program within 365 days of hire is necessary, followed by updating registration to Registered Pharmacy Technician status. Professional conduct aligned with hospital and departmental mission, vision, and values is expected.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Registered or eligible for pharmacy technician registration in Ohio.
  • Pharmacy Technician Trainees must submit all required documentation to the Ohio Board of Pharmacy at least 10 business days before start date.
  • Maintain Registered Pharmacy Technician status with Ohio Board of Pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Technician Trainees must obtain Registered Pharmacy Technician status within 1.5 years of hire.
  • Continues to meet departmental competency requirements and pharmacy standards of employee conduct.
  • Maintains active registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and fulfills all continuing education and competency requirements necessary to maintain registration throughout employment.
  • If registered as an Ohio Board of Pharmacy Technician Trainee, completion of the OSUWMC employer-based training program is required within 365 days of hire, followed by updating registration to Registered Pharmacy Technician status with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and packages medication dosage forms for oral, parenteral, enteral, ophthalmic, topical, and rectal administration for patient use and in research protocols.
  • Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures, including small and large volume parenteral, cassettes for portable infusion devices, chemotherapy, and total parenteral nutrition solutions using aseptic technique for use in patients and in research protocols.
  • Distributes medications from the pharmacy for patient use in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Maintains accurate dispensing records for medications, supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains efficient area operations and resolves problems to ensure optimal customer service.
  • Maintains appropriate medication, equipment and supplies inventory levels to minimize delays in customer service.
  • Inspects medication areas and maintains storage standards set forth by the TJC and other health regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the area and anywhere medications are stored.
  • Interacts with physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals.
  • Satisfies life-safety training and other training and education requirements.
  • Prepares, packages, and labels medications pursuant to a pharmacist-reviewed order in accordance with Ohio Board of Pharmacy regulations and institutional policies.
  • Assists in the preparation of medication dosage forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, ophthalmic, topical, rectal, and investigational medications.
  • Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures utilizing aseptic technique under pharmacist supervision, including small- and large-volume parenteral, portable infusion device cassettes, and chemotherapy agents (as permitted by role and competency).
  • Distributes medications, supplies, and equipment in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation related to medication preparation, dispensing support activities, and inventory control.
  • Ensures medications are stored appropriately, monitored for expiration dates, and secured according to regulatory standards.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels of medications, equipment, and supplies to prevent service delays.
  • Inspects medication storage areas under pharmacist direction to ensure compliance with standards established by The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of medication preparation and storage areas.
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate medication distribution needs and resolve operational concerns.
  • Participates in departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and competency validation processes as assigned by supervisors and managers.
