About The Position

The incumbent in this position serves as a lead pharmacy technician for the Cherokee Indian Hospital. The incumbent will perform technical and support duties associated with the provision of pharmaceutical services and will oversee the pharmacy technician staff in regard to training, mentorship, and quality assurance to ensure patients receive appropriate and accurate care.

Requirements

  • Prior experience as a pharmacy technician.
  • Knowledge of basic pharmacy process and systems, pharmaceutical drug names, calculations, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy operations as it relates to technician functions.
  • Knowledge to manage the ordering, receipt, accounting of, and proper storage of pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people from various backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage other people and put them in a position to provide appropriate care for our patients.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in order to gain the confidence, support, and cooperation of the technician staff.
  • Basic proficiency in position expected within 6-12 months of the date of hire.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Five years of specialized experience including experience as a pharmacy technician, working in health care in a hospital or practice setting with direct patient care experience, or in a pharmaceutical firm or laboratory.
  • For internal promotions, two years’ experience at Tech II level is required.
  • At least one year of service as an advanced PTCB (CPhT-Adv) certified technician.
  • Must be eligible to earn Advanced PTCB within one year of hire/promotion.
  • Knowledge of automated pharmacy systems and programs including but limited to: Script-Pro, Omnicell, SIM, RPMS, and EHR.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature.
  • Knowledge of characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical systems and metric/apothecary systems of weights and measures.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
  • Knowledge of sterile and aseptic procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal pharmacy laws and regulations, Joint Commission and IHS standards.
  • Knowledge of automated pharmacy systems such as Script-Pro and Omnicell.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as: EHR, RPMS, Medi-Dose, and McKesson.
  • Ability to walk, sit, reach, bend, and lift.

  • Ability to label prescription bottles including addition of appropriate auxiliary information labels.
  • Ability to process ScriptPro produced prescriptions and certify correct filling by system through use of bar-coding protocol.
  • Ability to fill prescriptions in quantity and manner consistent with third party insurance requirements.
  • Ability to prepare sterile reconstitutions and intravenous admixtures using sterile and aseptic procedures.
  • Ability to visually check all prepared intravenous solutions and admixtures for inadequate preparation, unexpected discoloration, particles, and unexpected participation.
  • Ability to determine compatible solutions for each admixture and sufficient volumes of solution to support medication dosages.
  • Ability to accurately enter admixture orders into the RPMS data base program.
  • Ability to label prepared products accurately and completely.
  • Ability to prepare unit dose medication packages for distribution.
  • Ability to monitor and refill automated prescription dispensing systems with appropriate drug item and package size.
  • Ability to prepackage drug from bulk containers to smaller patient ready dispensing units for efficient stock maintenance and prescription processing.
  • Ability to prepackage single use medication units for inpatient, emergency department, and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Ability to compound bulk supplies such as ointments and solutions following appropriate guidelines for aseptic and pharmaceutically elegant preparations.
  • Ability to correctly label and store all prepared medication supplies.
  • Ability to maintain sufficient prepackaged medication supply to meet after hour dispensing requirements.
  • Ability to maintain the pharmacy and storage areas in a neat, clean, and orderly condition by organizing, dusting, and cleaning as needed.
  • Ability to remove and dispose of all unnecessary materials, shredding patient sensitive materials to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to remove and provide for proper disposal of expired and deteriorated medications.
  • Ability to return medications not retrieved by patients back to stock according to accepted pharmacy protocol.
  • Ability to return unneeded drug supplies, bottles, and filled prescriptions back to stock and ScriptPro machine as indicated.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of professional standards of pharmacy practice when serving patients of all age groups, service unit staff, and the greater community.
  • Adherence to the Indian Health Service Standards of Practice for Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the weekly technician schedule and/or schedules duties and assignments.
  • Assign and participate in tasks associated with the provision of outpatient pharmaceutical services, including receptionist/clerical duties, data entry, preparing prescriptions, dispensing refilled medications, stocking pharmacy equipment, maintaining records, and handling insurance and billing.
  • Assign and participate in tasks associated with the provision of inpatient pharmaceutical services, including data entry, making sterile preparations, preparing unit dose supplies, checking for outdated medications, maintaining records, and maintaining medication inventories.
  • Perform and delegate inventory control activities, including ordering pharmaceuticals and supplies, managing stock, inventory maintenance, maintaining records, and managing requisitions and requests.
  • Train new technician personnel and assist the director of pharmacy services in evaluating them during the initial 90-day probation period.
  • Reconcile McKesson invoices.
  • Assist the director and assistant director of pharmacy services in placing purchase orders for supplies.
  • Ensure all essential areas of technician service are covered.
  • Assign and participate in additional department duties, including automated equipment maintenance and monitoring, department cleaning and organizing, professional interactions with pharmacy and hospital staff, proper monitoring of medication storage conditions and status, and maintenance of appropriate records related to pharmacy operation.
  • Assist the pharmacist(s) in the provision of patient pharmaceutical care.
  • Calculate dosages to match physician orders with pharmacy stocks.
  • Explain pharmacy policies and prescription directions to patients as necessary.
  • Review and check all areas of the facility which maintain medication supplies, including nursing units, ER, and pharmacy areas for expired drugs and proper storage conditions on a routine basis.
  • Dispose of and/or return for credit deteriorated or outdated drugs.
  • Process incoming orders, shelve and store all received drugs and supplies.
  • Assure that all drug stock is stored appropriately and rotated properly.
  • Utilize pharmacy and warehouse space efficiently.
  • Maintain adequate working shelf stock of all medications.
  • Manage and maintain adequate level of supply in ScriptPro robotic system.
  • Fill inpatient, outpatient, and ER drug requisitions.
  • Restock pharmacy automated dispensing systems according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and manage automated dispensing for adequate stock and efficient utilization.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and statistical records related to inventory management.
  • Perform clerical duties as needed, such as typing memos, copying, and distribution of information for pharmacists and pharmacy related committees.
  • Answer patient questions as to pharmacy procedures and policies.
  • Greet patients and assist with fulfilling the patient’s medication requests and needs.
  • Maintain patient charts in proper sequence for processing.
  • Stage completed medication orders and patients for pharmacist counseling.
  • Screen patient medical records for obvious transcription, technical, and/or omission errors.
  • Assess patient eligibility and determine patient insurance status.
  • Accurately enter prescription orders into the RPMS computer system, including interpretation of the prescription order in terms of drug name, strength, directions for use, correct quantity, and number of refills.
  • Select correct drug, strength, and dosage form from inventory.
  • Count appropriate quantity and review data entry prescription information for accuracy.
  • Label prescription bottles including addition of appropriate auxiliary information labels.
  • Process ScriptPro produced prescriptions and certify correct filling by system through use of bar-coding protocol.
  • Fill prescriptions in quantity and manner consistent with third party insurance requirements.
  • Assist in insurance Point of Sale billing process and processing.
  • Prepare sterile reconstitutions and intravenous admixtures using sterile and aseptic procedures.
  • Visually check all prepared intravenous solutions and admixtures for inadequate preparation, unexpected discoloration, particles, and unexpected participation.
  • Determine compatible solutions for each admixture and sufficient volumes of solution to support medication dosages.
  • Accurately enter admixture orders into the RPMS data base program.
  • Label prepared products accurately and completely.
  • Maintain appropriate workload records for IV admixtures.
  • Prepare unit dose medication packages for distribution.
  • Assist pharmacist with filling of unit dose carts for 24-hour period.
  • Monitor and refill automated prescription dispensing systems with appropriate drug item and package size.
  • Maintain appropriate workload records for unit dose preparations.
  • Prepackage drug from bulk containers to smaller patient ready dispensing units for efficient stock maintenance and prescription processing.
  • Prepackage single use medication units for inpatient, emergency department, and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Compound bulk supplies such as ointments and solutions following appropriate guidelines for aseptic and pharmaceutically elegant preparations.
  • Correctly label and store all prepared medication supplies.

  • Return unneeded drug supplies, bottles, and filled prescriptions back to stock and ScriptPro machine as indicated.
  • Maintain the highest level of professional standards of pharmacy practice when serving patients of all age groups, service unit staff, and the greater community.
