About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for the proper storage and distribution of drugs, receiving and accounting for drugs from vendors, and delivering medications to patient care and other areas. This role involves picking up drug returns and applicable paperwork, and restocking returned unit-dose products. The technician is responsible for filling patient drug boxes, floor stock orders, and automated dispensing cabinets, assisting pharmacists as directed, and maintaining a daily report.

Requirements

Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program OR Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience OR Six months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician Assistant or Trainee within the UPMC Health System OR Enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program and in good standing.
Must be familiar with a typewriter keyboard and demonstrate the ability by producing a neat, accurate, and legible copy.
Ability to adapt to the computerized Pharmacy Information Systems utilized.
Demonstrate initiative and good judgment.
PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration is required for all PA locations

Responsibilities

Accurately fills floor stock request.
Prepare correct labeling for bulk drugs.
Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
Basic understanding of the concept of physical stability and chemical stability as it relates to parenteral pharmaceuticals.
Correctly interpret physician orders and can distinguish between pharmaceutical orders, laboratory tests, radiology, nursing, and other orders.
Perform monthly medication storage area inspections.
Selects drugs from stock in proper dose, dosage form, and quantity as ordered by the physician under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Understands microbial contamination and exhibits Aseptic Technique while preparing sterile pharmaceutical products.
Repackages drugs into a unit-of-use container.
