This position assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. The Pharmacy Technician I accurately selects, prepares, and labels medications for patients, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. They also assist with medication distribution tasks, screen phone calls, and manage daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. The role may involve performing nonsterile compounding and sterile IV admixture following USP standards and aseptic technique, inspecting medication storage areas, and completing medication admission histories. Additionally, the technician may be asked to take on additional duties, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and assist in training other pharmacy technicians. They are expected to abide by all organization policies and procedures and comply with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. The role also includes obtaining and recording patient demographic information, data entry into the pharmacy system, and potentially performing third-party billing functions. Competence in providing age-appropriate care is essential. In some cases, the technician may obtain immunization certification and perform immunizations under pharmacist supervision, or operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
