About The Position

This position involves reviewing and preparing medications for dispensing, maintaining medication stock levels, providing customer service, performing and maintaining documentation, and offering administrative support to the Pharmacy department. The role requires adherence to regulatory guidelines and USP standards for medication preparation and record-keeping. The Pharmacy Technician will also be responsible for managing inventory, triaging questions, and supporting various pharmacy operations.

Requirements

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
  • Knowledge of USP guidelines for sterile aseptic technique.
  • Familiarity with Iowa State Board of Pharmacy and Drug Enforcement Agency regulations.
  • Understanding of FDA regulations for T3 statements.
  • Ability to maintain and audit billed transactions.
  • Experience with Macrohelix for the 340B Program is implied by the responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare medications to be dispensed for Pharmacist approval, ensuring correct dosage, form, strength, and quantity.
  • Prepare unit dose medications with bar code labels for the automated dispensing cabinet (Pyxis).
  • Label medication according to regulatory guidelines with all appropriate information prior to pharmacist verification.
  • Prepare intravenous (IV) medications for inpatient and outpatient use using sterile aseptic technique.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, fill bottles with prescribed tablets and capsules, and create labels.
  • Maintain appropriate medication stock levels for the pharmacy and patient care areas, including ordering supplies and medications.
  • Monitor drugs closely to establish appropriate stock levels and restock supplies and medications in the pharmacy and Pyxis units.
  • Deliver medications to ancillary departments upon request and monitor pharmaceutical inventory.
  • Keep the formulary up to date with current stock.
  • Monitor medication outdates in the pharmacy department, Pyxis stations, and crash carts.
  • Triage questions in the form of customer service, demonstrating excellent customer service and a pleasant demeanor.
  • Determine the level of expertise required to address patient/health provider needs and refer them appropriately.
  • Consult with the pharmacist on medication questions and relay information to patients and/or providers.
  • Perform and maintain documentation for all unit dose and compounded preparations, and medications dispensed to Pyxis.
  • Maintain and store all pharmacy records according to Iowa State Board of Pharmacy and Drug Enforcement Agency regulations.
  • Handle storage of CIII-CV records, T3 statements, and invoices in accordance with the law and FDA regulations.
  • File department records.
  • Provide administrative support for the Pharmacy department, including initiating calls, receiving visitors, scheduling appointments, and cleaning equipment.
  • Maintain and audit billed transactions for inpatient and outpatient medications.
  • Collect pharmacy charge sheets from ancillary departments and input charges.
  • Maintain NDC Crosswalk and audit patient visits on Macrohelix for the 340B Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
