About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a 100% Time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee to work in our Clinical Cancer Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center pharmacies. This position operates under general pharmacist supervision, coordinating and performing technical dispensing activities. It also involves direct patient interaction in hospital rooms, discretionary patient room entry, and collaboration with hospital unit staff. The role supports the development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, providing functional supervision as required. The department will consider candidates for either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee or Pharmacy Technician, Certified classification based on qualifications. Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  • Registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy at the time of hire (for Certified Technician).
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) (for Certified Technician).
  • Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification (for Certified Technician).
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire (for Trainee Technician).
  • All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment, unless their Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration has been extended by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. In such cases, the technician may continue to work under trainee status, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Board and Iowa Code (for Trainee Technician).
  • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient/customer service.
  • Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
  • Conduct interviews with patients or their representatives to collect and record patient profile information.
  • Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status.
  • Determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check.
  • Triage prescriptions to the appropriate team, recognizing workflow patterns for effective triage.
  • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize and maintain the ScriptPro Robot Fill cells/cassettes, including cleaning cells/cassettes, mapping brand changes, assigning drugs to cells, and returning unwanted prescriptions to cells.
  • Fill/refill prescriptions, reading labels for accuracy and correcting as needed.
  • Label and package the correct medication.
  • Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients.
  • Answer the dedicated prescription refill telephone line.
  • Generate prescription refill labels.
  • Verify addresses for prescriptions to be mailed and the date medication is needed.
  • Fill out call checks and note pickup times or dates for mailing.
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities, including returning to stock medications not picked up by patients.
  • Order supplies from Hospital Stores.
  • Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  • Generate and/or maintain (including filing) appropriate records related to prescription dispensing such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including conducting weekly and monthly inventories, ordering replacement supplies from internal sources, auditing records associated with dispensing, and resolving discrepancies on issuance forms.
  • Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only) for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration dates, and appropriate drug storage and references.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in the on-the-job training of new technicians.
  • Coordinate technical activities with other members of the team.
  • Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and educational requirements.
