About The Position

UPMC Corporate Pharmacy is hiring a Pharmacy Procurement Specialist I to join our team at UPMC Mercy. The position will work Monday through Friday and rotate between the following shifts: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM. 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. The Pharmacy Procurement Specialist 1 is responsible for the procurement of medications and pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with formulary guidelines, 340B program compliance (if applicable), inventory management best practices, and vendor contract requirements. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of the pharmacy supply chain while maintaining cost-effective purchasing.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Minimum two years of hospital or health-system pharmacy experience.
  • Purchasing or supply chain experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of 340B program operations is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy automation, inventory software, and EMR systems (e.g., Cerner, Epic, Pyxis, Omnicell).

Responsibilities

  • Purchase medications and supplies through approved vendors, GPOs, or 340B program wholesalers.
  • Monitor inventory levels and adjust par levels based on usage trends.
  • Track backorders, drug shortages, and proactively source alternatives.
  • Receive, inspect, and verify incoming shipments; reconcile invoices with purchase orders.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Assist with 340B split-billing software or tracking tools, if applicable.
  • Coordinate expired drug returns and controlled substance documentation.
  • Maintain strong relationships with vendors, wholesaler reps, and clinical pharmacists.
  • Participate in audits, including 340B, inventory, or compliance reviews.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy staff and clinical teams to support formulary management and support formulary transitions or new product additions by ensuring timely procurement.
  • Participate in cost-containment initiatives, including identifying opportunities for generic substitutions or therapeutic alternatives.
  • Maintains all record keeping for items loaned to and borrowed from other institutions and follows up on returns
  • Involved in the daily monitoring of drug shortages and recalls
