The Pharmacy Manager role is responsible for developing goals, objectives, and programs for the pharmacy department that align with the organization’s overall strategic plan. This position adheres to approved departmental policies, standard practices of the profession, and state and federal laws, and implements decisions of pharmaceutical, therapeutic, and hospital committees. The manager defines and resolves issues with the medication distribution system, continually evaluates performance, and leads the development and implementation of innovative systems of medication delivery and drug therapy monitoring. This role provides leadership and direction to the pharmacy staff, promotes positive customer relations, and contributes to a supportive and team-driven work environment. The Pharmacy Manager establishes and revises standards of care for pharmacy practices, plans, supports, and leads quality improvement efforts, and facilitates effective working relationships with physicians, nursing staff, administrators, and other personnel. This position serves as a resource for pharmacy and organizational policies, manages capital and operational budgets, and ensures operations are within budget guidelines. The manager ensures accurate patient instructions on prescriptions and refills, makes hiring, disciplining, and promotion decisions, and establishes and assesses internal controls and compliance with University policies. Employees are trained on controls and University policy and procedures. The role supervises the intravenous admixture program, with a focus on chemotherapeutic and investigational intravenous therapies, ensuring accurate and efficient preparation and delivery of injectable chemotherapy and other medications. Dosage amounts and intravenous compatibilities are accurately determined, and patient profiles and new orders are reviewed to prevent drug interactions and contraindications. A working knowledge of the pharmacy computer system and software programs is required, along with maintaining appropriate records and inventory. The Pharmacy Manager provides current and accurate drug information, manages the preparation and review of investigational drug products, and oversees the maintenance of accurate investigational drug records. Clinical medication order review and verification of computerized physician order entry for investigational and standard of care medications are performed. The role prepares, compounds, manufactures, and dispenses investigational drugs and materials, ensuring accuracy and integrity prior to delivery. Patients are counseled on investigational and/or home medications. The Pharmacy Manager trains and supervises technical staff, residents, and interns, ensuring compliance with governmental and sponsor regulations, laws, and policies. All other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy Services or her/his designee will also be performed.
