The Pharmacy Manager develops goals, objectives, and programs for the pharmacy department that align with the organization’s overall strategic plan. This role adheres to approved departmental policies, standard practices of the profession, and state and federal laws, and implements decisions of pharmaceutical, therapeutic, and hospital committees. The manager defines and resolves issues with the medication distribution system, continually evaluates performance, and leads the development and implementation of innovative systems of medication delivery and drug therapy monitoring. This position provides leadership and direction to the pharmacy staff, promotes positive customer relations, and contributes to a supportive and team-driven work environment. The Pharmacy Manager establishes and revises standards of care, plans, supports, and leads quality improvement efforts, and facilitates effective working relationships with physicians, nursing staff, administrators, and other personnel, serving as a resource for inter-disciplinary practices and communications. The role also serves as a resource to staff, physicians, and patients for pharmacy and organizational policies. Additionally, the Pharmacy Manager manages both capital and operational budgets, ensures operations are within budget guidelines, and provides explanations for variances. This role ensures accurate instructions are given to patients for new prescriptions and refills, and makes recommendations and decisions regarding hiring, disciplining, and promoting subordinates. The Pharmacy Manager establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of internal controls and compliance with University policies and procedures, and ensures employees are trained on these controls. A significant focus is placed on supervising the operation of the intravenous admixture program, particularly the preparation and monitoring of chemotherapeutic and investigational intravenous therapies, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. The role involves reviewing patient profiles and new orders to prevent drug interactions and contraindications, utilizing a working knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and software. Accurate records and inventory of all drugs are maintained. The Pharmacy Manager provides current and accurate drug information, manages the preparation and review of investigational drug products, and oversees the maintenance of accurate investigational drug records. Clinical medication order review and verification of computerized physician order entry are performed. The role includes preparing, compounding, manufacturing, and dispensing investigational drugs and materials, ensuring their accuracy and integrity prior to delivery to trial subjects. The Pharmacy Manager serves as a drug information resource and counsels patients on investigational and/or home medications. Finally, the role trains and supervises technical staff, residents, and interns, ensuring compliance with all applicable governmental and sponsor regulations, laws, and policies. All other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy Services or designee are also performed.
