Under the general supervision and work direction of the staff pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with departmental policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This role involves developing an accurate list of current “home” medications using all available resources, including conducting patient and/or caregiver interviews, contacting community pharmacies or other sources of medications, and utilizing computer resources. The intern will discuss the medication list with a pharmacist for approval and enter it into the hospital computer system. Additionally, the intern will assist other health care professionals with Medication Reconciliation issues, provide general assistance to pharmacist staff in completing clinical activities, and perform miscellaneous duties following departmental guidelines and procedures. The intern is expected to use appropriate judgment, refer problems to a pharmacist as needed, and organize time effectively to meet changing workload demands, demonstrating a consistent level of performance. Supplemental responsibilities include performing basic tasks of other staff during low staff periods within their training boundaries, answering the telephone professionally and referring calls appropriately, managing multiple priorities, assisting in training new employees and students, wearing professional attire, and knowing/following hospital and departmental procedures.
