About The Position
The Pharmacy Intern assists with pharmaceutical functions under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist. The role supports medication preparation and distribution across the hospital, including inpatient unit-dose dispensing, outpatient dispensing, IV additive preparation, and other procedures requiring knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology. The Hospital of Central Connecticut is an acute-care community teaching hospital providing inpatient and outpatient services in general medicine, surgery, and a wide range of specialties.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a PharmD program.
- Current State of Connecticut Intern Registration.

Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing and distributing medications throughout the hospital, including inpatient unit-dose and outpatient dispensing.
- Perform computer activities to maintain patient profiles, enter charges and credits, and generate unit-dose fill lists.
- Accurately fill unit-dose carts according to computerized lists.
- Exchange unit-dose carts, including transferring bulk items.
- Restock crash-cart medications and complete required documentation and follow-through.
- Fill emergency boxes and stat boxes, including documentation, expiration-date checks, and follow-through.
- Conduct patient-care-unit inspections.
- Perform technical pharmaceutical functions related to purchasing, receiving, and distributing drugs.
- Ensure medications are packaged with a bar code compatible with existing Pharmacy bar-code technology.
- Prepackage tablets, capsules, and other dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient dispensing.
- Participate in training and orienting new Pharmacy personnel.
- Prepare sterile products, intravenous admixtures, and chemotherapeutic agents under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Interact positively with patients and other hospital guests to enhance the quality of care and service.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
