About The Position

This role involves reviewing and dispensing medications in either a retail/community or medical center/institutional setting. Responsibilities include ensuring prescription accuracy, advising patients and providers on medication use, monitoring patient progress, and potentially supervising support personnel. The position requires adapting to new technology and adhering to all established regulations and standards governing pharmacy practice. Depending on the setting, duties may include unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices. Pharmacy services can encompass various specialties such as acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, and more, potentially involving direct patient interaction and interdisciplinary team rounding.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy.
Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions.
Knowledge of state and local regulations.
License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.

Responsibilities

Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, ascertain needed ingredients, and evaluate suitability.
Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
Review, interpret, and dispense both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients in a retail/community setting.
Respond to prescription issues and advise providers on medication selection, dosage, interaction, and side effects.
Counsel patients on medication prescription, including proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, and storage.
Monitor the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy.
Learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves.
Provide oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy series and pharmacy support personnel.
Review and interpret provider orders in a medical center or institutional setting.
Provide drug information and assist in problem-solving in a medical center or institutional setting.
Perform duties such as unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating the electronic medical record, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices.
Utilize appropriate age-related patient information to assess pharmaceutical needs across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Follow all established regulations and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy.
May be required to act as a shift supervisor.
Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
May involve involvement in acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation.
May include decentralized clinical functions, such as direct patient interaction/interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, customer or patient counseling, collecting accurate medication list.
May also include centralized clinical functions, such as checking and dispensing medications and overseeing the clinical functions of the IV room.
